When the Scranton Library Trustees met to discuss the need for their popular Parade of Parties fundraiser, the committee was concerned about the effects the recession might have on this project. The idea of asking for major sponsorships and spending big money on invitations, tote bags, and an end-of-fundraiser gala just didn¹t sit right, said president Ted Mallory. This year especially, we felt like we needed to raise money without overspending. The result? Parade of Parties recession-style.

Since the Scranton Library is not fully funded by local taxes, fundraising efforts such as Parade of Parties play an essential role in supporting the library¹s current programs and providing funds for special projects and technological advances. In 2005, Parade of Parties gave $66,000 to the library which was used to expand the library¹s programs and services, add to its collection of bestsellers, DVDs, books on CDs, and the audio library for adults and children.

During the Parade of Parties, funds are raised through a series of parties and events hosted by Madison residents as well as through corporate and individual sponsors. In the past, many parties have successfully raised money for the library on small budgets. For example, the Parade of Pooches has been one of the most successful, raising thousands of dollars with minimal financial outlay.

The focus this year will be on wonderful fundraising events that lose little of their profits to party expenses. Events will run from June to September, with a closing party for sponsors and party hosts to be held at the library in September. Prizes will be awarded to the parties that produce the largest income while spending the least.

Committee members (Dani Woods and Barbara Parker -parties, Helen Bosch- sponsors, Roberta Isleib - publicity) will be reaching out to sponsors and party hosts over the next few weeks to solicit support for this important fundraiser.
